Hyun Ji Choi, cello
Hyun Ji Choi, a native of Seoul, South Korea, started playing cello at the age of twelve. After coming to the United States, she entered the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division to continue her musical studies. She continued to earn her bachelor’s degree from the Juilliard School and her master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music, studying with Ardyth Alton and Alan Harris. She has toured Argentina, Guatemala, Mexico, and Japan as a soloist, recitalist, and a chamber musician. She has participated in the Pacific Music Festival, National Orchestra Institute, Toronto Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, and Killington Music Festival. Over the years, she was selected to play in masterclasses led by Janos Starker, Paul Kats, Dennis Brott, members of Emerson String Quartet, and Tokyo String Quartet. Currently, she is working as a member of the Grand Rapids Symphony’s cello section. She is also a member of Apas Piano Trio and performs regularly in the Chicago area.
