Jimmy Leach, trumpet

A native of Oklahoma, Jimmy Leach performs in classical, jazz, and early music settings. He has performed with the Aspen Music Festival Orchestra, Boston Symphony Brass and Percussion, Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Classical Orchestra, and the Grand Rapids Symphony. As a jazz trumpeter, his credits include the Aspen Jazz Ensemble, Disney World, Opryland, the West Michigan Jazz Society, and around the world with Holland American Line. On the Baroque/ natural trumpet, Jimmy has performed with the Handel and Haydn Society, Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute, American Bach Soloists Academy, and Grand Valley Baroque.

As a music educator, Jimmy’s teaching experiences have included positions in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, North Dakota, and Massachusetts, including Harvard University, where he received teaching awards for courses in music theory, jazz history, and music history. Currently Jimmy teaches part-time at Hope College.

In 2008 Jimmy earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in trumpet performance from Boston University, where he studied with Tom Rolfs, principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Jimmy’s interest in jazz led to his dissertation on the music of Louis Armstrong, and he recently completed a certificate in jazz composition and arranging at Boston’s Berklee College of Music.
